Table of Contents

This is a big change, so we highly recommend you read this so you don't get confused going into Kortex. We're going to talk about:

  • Major changes
  • Pros and cons of kAI V1
  • Things to try and capabilities
  • Pricing and free kAI usage
  • What comes next for kAI

Please note: this is Kortex AI version 1.

While you'll be shocked with how much you can do, we still have a long way to go. You can always suggest features and ask for help inside our Discord server!

Also, there are so many different things you can do with this. If you create something cool with kAI, please share it on X or Instagram and tag @kortexco so we can share with everyone.

Major Changes

Aside from general bug fixes, infrastructure improvements, and performance improvements, here are the main changes that could cause confusion:

1) Capture is now "Chats"

Note: if you are a current user, your captures were moved to one Default Chat.

If you are having sync issues with your captures, you can navigate to Settings > Account > Reset Sync and that should get them to show.

Onto the changes:

Most AI tools only allow you to chat with AI.

What if you just want to save an idea or jot down your thoughts? What if you don't want a response?

Then, what if you want to summarize all of those ideas by turning on kAI and asking it to summarize the chat for you?

Chats and capture are now all in one place. You can now organize your captures in a better way.

Tips:

  • Have one Chat for random ideas. You can still organize captures by connecting them to documents as usual.
  • If you send a message without choosing a Chat, a new Chat will be created. This can get messy quick, so be mindful of that.

As an example, you can jot down ideas without kAI toggled and connect them to a project you're working on, like a newsletter.

Then, you can toggle kAI on and as it to turn all of those ideas into a newsletter outline you can start with. What you can do with kAI is up to your imagination.

2) kAI toggle and adding connections

To enable kAI, you can press the kAI button or press Tab.

When kAI is toggled, you will receive a response to your message. When it isn't toggled, it will be treated as a normal capture.

There is a new "Add Connection" and "Add Context" button for when kAI is enabled or disabled.

When you type @, it will add the connection inline.

When you type +, it will now add the connection to the message without having an inline backlink.

kAI Capabilities & Features

AI opens up so much potential for creativity, learning, research, and general advice.

We will be sending out YouTube tutorials and prompt libraries to help you best learn AI. For now, here are a few things you can do:

  • Chat with kAI from anywhere with floating chats – Press Option+C on Mac or Alt+C on Windows to do any of the below features from anywhere on your computer (desktop app only).
  • Summarization – Get summaries of documents, YouTube videos, PDFs, source highlights and more.
  • Learning – Whenever you get stuck, ask kAI instead of Google to get answers faster.
  • Writing – Have kAI generate post ideas, newsletter topics, outlines, and ask questions like "What is a common pain point people face when it comes to [topic]?

Here is a library of simple prompts you can start using now for summaries, learning, and writers block.

  • Use documents and sources for faster prompting – You can type @ or "Add Context" to reference documents or sources fast.
  • Chat with YouTube video - Paste a link to a YouTube video in a chat and it will automatically add it as a source. You can use this for writing ideas, learning, or note-taking.
  • Chat with Highlights - When you mention a source in a chat, it will use the highlights you've imported from Readwise as context. Get creative with this!
  • Chat with Documents – Mention a document in a chat to ask questions or use as context.
  • Get info from your workspace – When you ask general questions, kAI will pull information from your workspace to give you the most relevant answer.

Now, the thing about AI right now is that the output is only as good as you are at prompting.

If you want to try out the "How To Write Tweets" document, duplicate it to your workspace. Then, ask kAI to write a certain number of tweets and give it another source or document to pull tweet ideas from.

We also put together short guide to writing better prompts. Feel free to read that here when you have the time.

Pros & Cons of V1

Since this is kAI V1, we still have more features to add.

Please be mindful that this will only be improved with time. We were excited to get this feature out and think it will change the impact of your workflow.

With that said, here are a few cons to its current state:

  • You are not able to mention specific authors, only sources in your library.
  • We are using Gemini as our first model (Booo!! We know we know). Other models like Claude 3.7 Sonnet will be added as fast as possible. We chose Gemini because it is incredible at pulling large amounts of information from PDFs and YouTube videos. With the right prompts, it can do almost anything well. Get creative!
  • Some things may break. Adding a ton of documents and sources to a chat may not work as expected. We need to test and refine this, but know that it will be improved!

Here are a few pros of kAI vs other tools:

  • You can reference anything in your workspace. With other tools like ChatGPT, you have to have multiple tabs open to reference what you're working on.
  • Because kAI is not complete, Kore and Premium have unlimited access without credit limits (more on this below). When more expensive models go in, like reasoning models, there will be soft limits.
  • If you are good at prompting, you can do incredible things.

Future Features

kAI improvements will come fast.

You will hear about each improvement here.

  • More models – We want you to be able to choose between the best models on the market like Claude Sonnet 3.7, Grok 3, Perplexity, and ChatGPT 4o. That way, you don't have to pay for multiple subscriptions. And, each of those models are great for different use cases like writing!
  • Transcripts for every source – any link, article, YouTube video, PDF, file, image, tweet, thread, or social post will be added to your workspace with it's content. You can have all of your knowledge in one place.
  • Chat with PDF - Upload a PDF to your library and reference it in a kAI enabled chat.
  • Global capture – be able to capture any source with a keyboard shortcut to automatically add and transcribe it to your workspace.
  • kAI Assist – Get line by line edits and improvements on your writing or documents. If you're familiar with Cursor for programming, pair that with the Hemingway editor. It's like that.
  • Rewrites, suggestions, and ask kAI – be able to select portions of your documents and get specific tips from kAI.
  • Neural search – As you're writing in a document, have a "neural search" pane open on the side that surfaces relevant ideas, documents, and sources from your workspace to help with writer's block.

Pricing & Usage

Here's the thing, we don't want to add on AI as another monthly charge similar to Notion.

There's nothing wrong with that at all, but kAI will be an integral part of the Kortex experience. That's why we need to bake the price into current tiers.

Right now, here's what you need to know:

  • Free Tier – You get 15 free messages per month.
  • Kore & Premium Tier – Unlimited messages for the time being.

Once we add more expensive models, unlimited usage is not feasible.

Claude, as an example, is notoriously expensive.

So the question arises, why would I use Kortex if I can pay for Claude or ChatGPT for unlimited access? A few reasons:

  • The Kore tier will be less expensive than both. So if you don't use AI a lot, you pay less.
  • ChatGPT charges $200/month for their highest tier.
  • ChatGPT or Claude do not have access to your workspace or knowledge as context. Being able to reference 1000s of notes, documents, files, PDFs, highlights, and sources costs money.
  • AI is not the only feature in Kortex. You are also paying for storage. Storing 1 terabyte worth of files and videos is a lot.
  • In Kortex, you will be able to choose your model, not just ChatGPT. So, rather than paying upwards of five monthly subscriptions to use different models, you get them all inside Kortex.
  • Lastly, convenience. You get to use AI in a workspace where all of your knowledge is. You don't have to switch between tabs or applications to use AI.

With that said, we previously discussed a price increase.

That is still happening, but only when kAI is very good. For now, you can enjoy unlimited access.

If you are already a Kore or Premium subscriber, your price will not increase. It is locked in. The price increase will only apply to new subscribers.

If you would like to upgrade, you can do so in Settings > Billing inside of Kortex.

Pricing will be based off of either messages per month or credits per month. We will be deciding which as we see how much our costs are and what is fair.

Privacy Concerns

Unfortunately with AI, you are using a third party.

At Kortex, we do not use your responses to train any kind of model.

However, the data included in the messages you send are sent to the specific model you are using.

Right now, since we only use Gemini, they do not use your data to train their models, but it is worth reviewing how Gemini uses your data here if you have concerns.

You can also review the Kortex privacy policy here.

As we add new models, you will be able to opt-in or out of kAI features.

As AI becomes more engrained into the Kortex experience, we will be as vocal as we can about privacy and do our best to implement models in a way that keeps your data safe.

Also, with full offline mode coming, you will be able to store certain files locally. In the future, we want to allow you to encrypt and password protect specific documents as you choose.

That's it for now.

Again, please ask questions in the Discord or let us know if you find unique ways to use kAI in your creative workflow!
